I really loved "Broken," Jenny Lawson's latest collection of essays。 The pieces vary widely in tone; there's a scathing critique of insurance companies, a vivid diary of her treatment for drug-resistant depression with an experimental therapy, and her description of how she tried to rid her yard of "lawn gerbils," more commonly known as rats。 It's not often a book makes me laugh out loud, but Lawson managed it。 In this god-forsaken year, that's a gift。 I really loved "Broken," Jenny Lawson's latest collection of essays。 The pieces vary widely in tone; there's a scathing critique of insurance companies, a vivid diary of her treatment for drug-resistant depression with an experimental therapy, and her description of how she tried to rid her yard of "lawn gerbils," more commonly known as rats。 It's not often a book makes me laugh out loud, but Lawson managed it。 In this god-forsaken year, that's a gift。 。。。more

PerfectWith a just right balance of humor and heart, Lawson once again shines a light on the real darkness of mental illness and chronic disease, and then makes you laugh so hard you can’t even read the funny passage to your husband。 Lawson has been a precious companion during my mental health journey and I will walkways buy what she writes (or draws)。
Terry Berger,
Loved her first 2 books。 This was Uneven。 Chapters where she gets real about her life are very good, really insightful descriptions of life with anxiety and depression。 Chapters where she list ideas (Shark Tank submissions) annoying and feel like filler。
Mary,
Even in the midst of incapacitating grief, Jenny makes me laugh。 This book came out at just the right time for me。 I don't have the eloquence at the moment to express how much I love this woman and her work, but trust that I do。 It's the only book I've pored through since losing my dad to Covid。 Bless you, Jenny。 I appreciate you more than you know。 Even in the midst of incapacitating grief, Jenny makes me laugh。 This book came out at just the right time for me。 I don't have the eloquence at the moment to express how much I love this woman and her work, but trust that I do。 It's the only book I've pored through since losing my dad to Covid。 Bless you, Jenny。 I appreciate you more than you know。 。。。more

Jenny Lawson is hilarious while also explaining her fight with depression, lawn gerbils and cock chafers。 Well worth a read for the many laugh out loud moments。
Rhonda,
Previous books were great, but this one fell short for me。
George Smith,
I cried and laughed so hard my wife came in to check on me。 And then I turned the page and Jenny predicted the entire thing。So basically this book is magic。

Love her!

Her willingness to embrace the correction by more astute individuals was very engaging and occasionally funny。Despite all her health conditions, she has managed always seek the brightside and offers hilarious antidotes as proof。 Her insights and spin on what are often embarrassing moments help illuminate that life is temporary and also take the stress off painful times。 As my goodreads friend, Barbara Saffer offers a delightful account of the shoe story。 There is a chapter about loosing shoes that had me near tears because I too have shared this experience even once on an elevator, although my shoe, nearly lost its life when it slid closed! So, why did I only award three stars? Well, I could have done without some of her animal stories。 There are several mentions of her collecting of small animal taxidermies dressed as humans and penchant for live rodents is slightly odd and not to many people's inclination。 These discussions leaned toward extreme and macabre and even the people in the stories she recounts agree with me。 Most significant to me, was that I found her to overshare on things I don't really find interesting or funny。 I did appreciate her comments about Victor (partner) being perfect for her and insights on some of their marriage matters but it was overshadowed by her almost vague innuendo of the sex she and her husband share are none of my business and I needed brain bleach at that point。 However as the book progressed I found several other discussions of her own behavior and mentions of masturbation not worthy of ink。 I am not a prude。 I'm also not a voyeur。 I don't listen to comedy that focuses on sex nor watch most R movies if that is its primary purpose。 Honestly, I found certain things she described as revolting, in fact some were so detailed that they made me sick to my stomach literally。 I realize that this aspect may not bother some but it was very off putting。 This alone I may have overlooked on not written more than a sentence about however, she has a very filthy mouth and this I observed throughout the book, her explicit sex talk was barely tolerable, it went beyond naughty。 Near the end, when she talked about her inventions she would like to offer the world。 That's when she tipped the scale into smut。 This is where some protest and talk about protected free speech。 I am offering my opinion as I was asked to do。 I'm not going to debate, if that is your issue, write your review telling why this is 5 stars。 Her details were beyond disgusting and lude。 I would hesitate to even let anyone know I read the book but her inventions for the shark tank show were ideas pornographic in nature and after half way, I skimmed a couple pages and then skipped the rest of the chapter, I couldn't force myself to read further。 I did read all the other chapters。 Had I known or anticipated such sexually graphic writing would have such a significant inclusion, I would not have entered to win this ARC。 Summary of Stars:Depression/Anxiety 5 Stars Animal Encounters 3 StarsLife Missteps 4 StarsSex Stories 0 StarsTotal 12 Stars/4 categories = 3 STARSThank you to the author, Henry Holt and Co。 and Goodreads for awarding of this ARC, all comments are based on my honest personal opinion。 。。。more

As Jenny Lawson’s multiple thousands of fans know, she’s one funny lady! She also runs a bookstore (big points) and she’s extremely upfront about topics like dogs’ penises, what she did when she was attacked by bears, and why her husband, Victor, still loves her… Her memoir is about how she learned to deal with cancer, including experimental treatments, what to do about an insurance company’s reluctance to cough up the money they owe you, and above all, how not to give up。 If you’re not a Jenny As Jenny Lawson’s multiple thousands of fans know, she’s one funny lady! 3。5 stars。 Lawson's message about removing the stigma from mental illness is always needed, and her descriptions of how it feels to live with depression, anxiety, and a host of physical ailments are poignant and true (as a person who also lives with depression)。 But after a while her surreal arguments with her husband, and bizarre stream of consciousness conversations with her friends/family become repetitive。 I skimmed through a lot of those chapters to get to the more substantial ones。 One thi 3。5 stars。 Lawson's message about removing the stigma from mental illness is always needed, and her descriptions of how it feels to live with depression, anxiety, and a host of physical ailments are poignant and true (as a person who also lives with depression)。 But after a while her surreal arguments with her husband, and bizarre stream of consciousness conversations with her friends/family become repetitive。 I skimmed through a lot of those chapters to get to the more substantial ones。 One thing I do appreciate about Lawson is that she never uses her daughter Hailey to get a laugh; in fact, I know almost nothing about how old Hailey is, whether she still lives with them, etc。 With today's shameless Mom blogging, I'm glad there's one Mom who understands something about privacy, especially considering how little she hides about her own life。 。。。more

The letter to the insurance company brought me to tears and I laughed out loud very hard at least twice。 Always a pleasure to read Jenny Lawson’s words。
Deidra,
I love Jenny Lawson。 She is ridiculous, and relatable, and her humor reminds me of some of my most favorite people。

A good mix of her hilarious escapades and more serious essays about dealing with her mental health。 As per her previous works, I found myself laughing out loud often and also feeling like I was hearing from a very good friend。

Laughter and Sadness The author is so clever! I had quite a few laugh out loud moments and that’s always fun。 I love the author’s wit。 This isn’t all fun and games though。 There are many serious moments when she writes about her struggles with mental health, or the lack thereof。 Such an interesting look at all she sees around her and inside her。 She is painfully honest。 Her mind is like a fast moving train, stopping briefly and flying on with hopefully no ending in sight。
A T,
Once again, Jenny Lawson wrote a life changing book。 Her humor keeps me stifling belly laughs so I don’t wake up my sleeping partner while I stay up way too late reading Broken。 Her honest words about her own wrangling of the anxiety mobsters and the depression demons were so similar to my own experience that it felt like I was reading my own diary at times。 So, if you like laughing and facing your demons, then this is the book for you。 If not, why did you even pick up this book?
Alison R。,
Jenny Lawson is just pure greatness。 All heart with some bonus hilarity thrown in。 Worth the read just for Chapter 12B alone。
Jennifer Ciaccio,
Her best to date。 Her books always pack a gut punch along with the funny, but this one just hit differently。 I have such respect for Lawson and her unabashed vulnerability。

So I was listening to the this book in my car and almost crying when all of a sudden there was a cop behind me that I didn’t even notice because I was so engrossed in this incredible book and anyway he pulled me over because my car inspection was up in July (it is April) and I got a ticket but I didn’t even care because I was so emotionally invested in this amazing book that I love。
